Apparently, this fish is most likely a captive-bred individual, my friend said he saw 'crocodile gars' for sale at Petsmart in nearby Spokane.

A 50 can hold a Florida for quite some time actually.. Also do not give much thought to how Pet stores label "Gar", often times they are not Lepisosteids at all and more frequently Belonids or Characins. Even when it is a Lepisosteid the name of the fish is 99% of the time wrong or just Made up. The most frequently seen Gar in the average hobby store is the Florida by far, others are often just incidental and really quite rare.

I have family in Western Montana and Idaho and used to spend a portion of my summers on Lake Couer d' Alene. While it wasn't an everyday occurance, from time to time we would pull up northern pike on our fishing trips. Not to sound like a Negative Nancy, but are you sure this fish wasn't just a northern? It would certainly explain the spots and the sharp teeth.

spots, sharp teeth, long snout  We still need a pic of the actual fish, whether it be a shilouette or of the fish doing its thing in the water, otherwise we are simply being theoretical and simply continuing the debate

I think the colder weather killed it or made it dormant because he is gone. On a whim while there, I took a small bit of Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets and threw them at a school of small pumpkinseeds and bluegills. I thought they would ignore it. They greedily snapped them up  . My fish are just being jerks!

yea that gar wont be back until next year in mid-late spring (if it survives the winter, depending on species it could). LMAO!!! to the wild pumpkinseed and bluegills eating the pellets :fishy:

That was insane, they didn't even hesitate to eat it, it was like baby food trained trout at a hatchery, if you've seen that it looks like reversed raining. But then again, mine are from Hayden Lake and nobody often tosses bread to ducks and fish at Hayden Lake.

No, but I talked to my friend "Biggies" who works for them and he said they caught some in a farm pond runoff ditch so it isn't too unlikely I'm not crazy.

Then why has no one heard about it? This should have been reported. Unless your source was overtly incompetent or ignorant that should have been reported and promptly.
